Proper Evaluation is Essential in the Diagnosis of ADHD
Posted on Monday January 17, 2005
Thousands of children are diagnosed each year with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Unfortunately many of these children are diagnosed without a proper evaluation. It is probably to say that most of these children are first identified at school. Well-meaning teachers and school counselors, seeing symptoms consistent with ADHD will suggest to the parent that they have their child evaluated. Unfortunately many of these children will then be referred to their family doctor who may not have the expertise to conduct a proper evaluation. Also, with the proliferation of Managed Care Insurance, some doctors will be unable to refer (or be discouraged from referring the child to a specialist. The problem is compounded by the fact that it is easy to rely on a simple behavioral checklist and all too easy to order a trial of a stimulant medication like Ritalin. Many ADHD specialists estimate that 50% of the children they see who are already on medication either were misdiagnosed or are over medicated. EEG Biofeedback therapists do comprehensive evaluations that include objective test like the Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA). The TOVA can be very helpful in resolving the diagnosis. It can be administered with or without the medication. In fact, results can even be compared on different dosages of medication. It is also used in the EEG training to measure progress and can ultimately show when treatment is no longer needed. Parents should have all the facts when considering an evaluation.
