Coffee contains a caffeine stimulant (about 135 mg a cup). Everyone knows that. But did you know how many other products we consume which also includes caffeine. - Excedrin - (130 mg in two tablets)
- Anacin - (64 mg in two tablets)
- Colas - (37-45 mg in 12 ounces)
- Sunkist Orange Soda - (41 mg in 12 ounces)
- Starbucks coffee ice cream - (40-60 mg)
- Tea - (50 mg in 1 cup)
- Dannon coffee yogurt - (45 mg in 1 cup)
There are numerous other sources that contain caffeine, from chocolate to prescription drugs. Soft drinks are a regular source of a caffeine that give kids a quick boost. Mountain Dew is high in caffeine. Surge has twice the amount of caffeine normal sodas contain. (Coca Cola was originally marketed as an "intellectual beverage" and "brain tonic" because of it known effect on the nervous system and brain.) A group of scientists and Center for Science in the Public Interest are petitioning the FDA to require food labels to disclose their caffeine content. They know the truth. Caffeine is harmful and addictive over time. Studies suggest that high levels of caffeine can increase the time it takes to get pregnant, as well as the risk of miscarriage or low birth-weight babies. That's why the FDA has an advisory warning that pregnant women should avoid caffeine. But let's face it. Caffeine is a stimulant which is not good for any of us, especially children.
